The Capuchin Crypt, also well known as "Imperial Crypt" or "Imperial Burial Vault", is the burial place of the emperors and empresses of the house of Habsburg and their families, with artworks that reflect more than four centuries of Austrian and European history.

In the course of time the crypt was enlarged several times by the most famous artists of their days to house the splendid shaped sarcophagi. Power and grief, evanescence and vanity, death and resurrection are the dominating issues.

Daily 10am–6pm, on Thursdays from 9am to 6pm

(Last entrance 5.40pm)

Guided tours (duration about one hour):
Wednesday to Saturday: 2pm - German, 3.30pm - English (bilingual if required)
May to October: Sunday at 2pm - German

  • The price for school classes and groups is to be paid together!
  • Groups of 10 persons or more are asked to register in order to avoid unnecessary waiting times!
  • The size of groups is generally limited to 25 persons due to official regulations. We will be happy to work out any special arrangements for you.
• Tourist guides
  During this year the following guideline will be implemented: guiding through the crypt will be permitted only for nationally certified tour guides or persons with special instruction in the emergency situations. We will soon send more information via chambers, professional associations and agencies.
